Surely, if he has any sense, the first thing he will do is to appoint an American as his assistant.
Would this appease many?
Yes, if it's the right assistant and he names his assistant within the net few weeks.

How dumb :kma::rotflmao1:
Karolyi was living in a dictatorship, sought political asylum in the United States and then became a citizen. The situations are not remotely comparable.I'm surprised at the choice also. This does happen in other sports all the time though. Here is a very famous case: Bela Karolyi, the head of the Romanian Olympic women's gymnastics team defected to the USA in the 80's, and became the head of the USA Olympic gymnastic's team.

A better example is Jurgen Klinsmann coaching the US soccer team, but again that doesn't compare to the current move in terms of the competition history of the coach in the relevant events.
Bottom line is, I want American players to grow their arsenals.
If working with someone other than an American helps them grow, I'm all for it.
Adhering to old standards and former glory hasn't and doesn't work.
Both Johan and his wife Christel, are salt of the earth people, both personally and professionally, their character and standards are beyond reproach.
I would stand with whoever is picked for Captain for Team USA,
but that it has been placed in Johan's hands, European or not, is a good thing/
For the players, this is a good thing.
They will glean something new perhaps.
And from a marketing perspective, it's a ratings bonanza!
We should all take a cue from Jay Helfert and be available to lend a hand.
Y'all can lose your minds if you want to, and give our ego's a hug,
but right now, we should all be happy American players are being invested in in both knowledge and time and
be humble and gracious for the opportunity given to us,
because THIS IS A CHANCE TO GROW!!
The Americans should take this as a wake-up call and get their act together and they should outright reject a European as their team captain.
Johann is a very good friend so I am torn with this decision. Unquestionably he is the best man for the job - perhaps the only one. But the question is is this the right job for the man. WHICH JOB?
He needs to be clear what his responsibilities are. Mark Wilson foundered on the back of multi tasking because he had a lot of other logistics to worry about. Season long qualifiers prevented him from identifying the composition of his team until a couple of weeks before the event.
So he had no chance to address the glaring problem of the skill gap between US and European players. HOW WILL THIS BE ANY DIFFERENT FOR jOHANN?
Perhaps the short term solution is to use this years rankings to determine who is eligible to play in 2018. Then he could work on their individual weaknesses.
Then he would need a team for 2017 - Enter Mika Immonen, Thorsten Hohmann. Darren Appleton, Jayson Shaw (all compulsary drafted by Mr Trump because he promised to Make America Winners Again) and SVB.
Because Shane is a folk hero he would remain for 2018 but the other four could test the skills of the NEW IMPROVED 2017 US citizens qualifiers in a playoff.
Once you have bitten the bullet of Internationalism then it becomes clear that if you want to become World Class you have to mix and learn from World Class.
Unless Johann can get to the seat of the problem at an early stage then I fear that his spotless credentials may be sullied
The Mosconi Cup is the Europeans vs. the Americans. Appointing a European to be the captain of the American team is in direct conflict with the theme of the contest and is wrong. Matchroom has gone too far this time. What's next? Inserting a European player on to the American team?

Wait till you see Team "America"
Darren Appleton
Jason Shaw
Thorsten Hohman
SVB
Guest Appearance by Alex P, since he married a American girl.
I think the USA really has a chance this year, all Matchroom had to do was give up on the Americans.
